the "divided highway" to the hike. The purpose of today was trail maintenance, in honor of earth day. It's the first time I've ever done anything like this, and it totally rocked. We got to spend the day outside with tools working to support a hobby I love. The only sucky part was actually carrying the tools to the working site. Luckily we didn't have to carry them back, since another work party was coming out the next day to do some more work in the same area, so we just hid the tools in a pile behind a large fallen tree.

We weren't supposed to clear away the big fallen trees - other workers apparently come in on a special trip to cut the logs off the trail. However, it was apparently very important that we clear away all of the brush and branches sticking out of the fallen trees, so they're totally ready to be cut up and rolled out of the way of the trail.

pretty scenery while we were working

another lady and i spent about an hour hacking away at this log with axes. it used to completely block the trail. i'm not sure why we bothered, since the loggers i mentioned will be coming in to clean it up anyway. but it was fun, and good practice with the axe. i'm thinking on the next trail maintenance i should actually bring safety goggles.

megan had spent the previous couple of days with a pretty bad cold, but she wouldn't quit.

i'm actually not sure which branch of the snoqualmie trails we were working on. it was either the south or middle fork.

our work party. i think after two trail maintenance days, you earn your own hat with your name on it. :-)
